Children’s books may seem simple to some readers, but powerful children’s books know how to speak to all ages that make a lasting impression. In this workshop, award-winning author and founder of STORYMIX Jasmine Richards and the celebrated illustrator Diane Ewen will explore the craft of writing and illustrating for children by discussing the interplay of text and art, the importance of respecting a child’s inner world, the revision process, and how to lean into your own experiences for compelling and emotionally rich storytelling.
About Jasmine Richards / STORYMIX:
STORYMIX is a fiction production company with a focus on more inclusive representation in children’s books. Jasmine Richards, the founder of STORYMIX, has over 15 years’ experience in commissioning and editing fiction including roles at Hamish Hamilton, Puffin, and Dutton Books in New York.
About Diane Ewen:
Diane Ewen is British illustrator, born in Walsall, in the West Midlands. She has always been in love with art and graduated from the University of Wolverhampton with a B.A. Honours Degree in illustration. She likes the fact that illustrations are the first things that entice the reader to engage with a book and is inspired by the use of vibrant colour. Her debut into publishing was the illustration of the “Pretty Poodle Parlour,” published by Orion and written by Angela MCallister.
